Drawing a human face on a canvas only a few dozen dots wide sounds impossible. And in a sense it is: if you try to actually draw the eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, hair and outline of a face at that size, the result will almost certainly fall apart. There simply are not enough dots.
Yet pixel art characters manage to tell us who they are, or what creature they are, with a shockingly small number of dots. What makes that work is not drawing skill. It is the judgment of what to keep and what to throw away. This page walks through how to make a person or character read convincingly on a small canvas, expressed as concretely as possible in numbers and step-by-step decisions. Everything here applies directly to converting images in Heartopia Design Studio.
One note before we start: numbers like "32 dots square" and "48 dots square" used below are hypothetical figures chosen to explain the reasoning. The canvas types and resolutions you can actually use are the ones that correspond to the in-game design frames, and you select them in the tool. Read the numbers as proportions and scale them to whichever resolution you have chosen.
The first mental shift is accepting that large art and small art are not the same craft at different scales. A large picture generally improves as you add detail. A small picture gets dirtier as you add detail. Working on a small canvas is subtraction, not addition.
Consider the raw amount of information available. A 64-dot square canvas gives you 4,096 cells; a 32-dot square canvas gives you only 1,024. And if you are drawing a full-body character, only a fraction of that goes to the face. Fitting a whole body into 32 dots square leaves roughly 10 to 12 dots of vertical space for the head, and once you subtract the bangs and the chin, the "interior of the face" is at most 6 to 8 dots tall and 6 to 8 dots wide. Call it 40 to 60 cells total. If you want eyes, a nose, a mouth and eyebrows inside that area, each feature gets one or two dots. That is the arithmetic.
So change the goal. You are not trying to reproduce a face. You are trying to make the viewer's brain recall a face. Human perception reads two dots placed side by side as eyes, and therefore as a face. Accuracy is not required at all. What is required is placing the minimum set of cues that read as a face in positions that cannot be misread.
From that viewpoint the working question becomes very clear: "Does this dot help the viewer identify the subject?" Any dot that does not is worth deleting, no matter how faithful it is to the source image.
What decides whether a small piece of pixel art is legible is not the interior detail but the silhouette, the outer shape. Pixel art is often shown scaled down, or seen from a distance, and the outer shape is the last piece of information to survive those conditions.
Testing this is easy. Imagine your work in progress filled in with a single flat color. Looking only at that black shadow, could you name the character? If you could not, no amount of interior rendering will fix the impression. Holding your phone at arm's length, or squinting at the screen, produces the same test. If it reads while blurred, it passes.
To give a silhouette personality, build "hooks" into the outer edge.
Tip: In Heartopia Design Studio, the conversion preview doubles as your distance test. Move back from the screen a little and look only at the shape, not the color numbers. If it does not read as a person there, redoing the crop or choosing a higher-resolution canvas will get you further than any amount of touch-up.
The face is where beginners overdraw the most. As calculated above, the interior of the face gives you only about six to ten dots of height. So instead of including everything, set priorities. The table below is a rough guide.

The eyes are the one feature you can never give up. People read facial direction and emotion from the eyes. There are three rules worth following.
If you can afford two dots of height per eye, make the upper dot darker and the lower one slightly lighter. That alone reads as "lashes plus iris" and adds a surprising amount of information. For a downcast look, keep only the upper dot — a one-dot change that switches the expression.
The nose is the classic feature you are better off not drawing on a small canvas. A dark dot dropped into a field of skin tone does not read as a nose; it reads as a smudge. Countless pixel art characters prove that a face works fine without one. If you insist on including it, place a single dot only slightly darker than the skin, halfway between the eyes and the mouth. The key is to avoid a definite brown or black.
The mouth is one dot by default: a dark dot for a neutral expression, or a two- to three-dot horizontal line for a smile. To raise the corners, lift the two outer dots one step above the center dot — but that requires at least five dots of face width to work. An open mouth needs a minimum of two dots tall by three dots wide, which is simply not realistic for a full-body character on a 32-dot-square canvas.
Eyebrows add expression when present, and the face still works without them. Include them if you have room. When you do, the iron rule is to never let them touch the eyes — always leave one dot of gap. Touching eyebrows simply read as thicker eyes, not as eyebrows at all.
One dot of height difference is all the tilt you need. Drop the outer end by one dot for a worried look, drop the inner end for an angry one, keep them level for neutral. That single dot changes a small character's impression dramatically. For color, use something marginally lighter than the hair, or the hair color itself.
Real people are six to eight heads tall, but drawing a six-head-tall character on a small canvas leaves the face only one sixth of the total area, and it will collapse completely. The standard solution is to exaggerate down to two or three heads tall. It is not a stylistic whim; it is the inevitable way to free up dots for the face.
Here is one example allocation for fitting a full body into 32 dots square.
With that split the head occupies roughly 40 percent of the image, which finally leaves room to place facial features. The body should then be simplified aggressively. Arms become two- or three-dot-thick sticks, hands become a one- or two-dot blob at the end, and fingers are not drawn at all. The legs can be a single merged mass with one dark dot-wide line down the center to suggest the separation.
A bust shot changes the whole calculation. Fitting only the face into 32 dots square gives you 16 to 20 dots of height for the face interior, which is enough to support whites of the eyes, shading on the nose, and lip color — everything you would normally cut. Deciding "full body or face only" up front is the first and most important design decision you make on a small canvas.
Hair is where beginners fail most often. Trying to draw individual strands, or a mass of thin lines, produces nothing but scattered single dots — visual grain — at small sizes.
The correct approach is to treat hair as three to five large shapes, or clumps. Short hair might be three: the bangs, the left side of the head, the right side. Long hair might be four: bangs, left fall, right fall, and the mass spreading behind. Separate the shapes using the bumps and notches of the outline.
For the border between two shapes, use either one dark dot-wide line or simply two adjacent colors with a brightness difference. Switching color without drawing a line often looks more natural at small sizes.
Highlights, the shine on the hair, also need to be thought of as shapes rather than lines. Place one bright band, three to six dots wide and one to two dots tall, across the upper part of the hair. Adding several of them, or expressing shine with scattered dots, only looks like noise. The principle is one highlight, with width.
Whether to surround the character with a dark line is a major decision on a small canvas, because the proportion of area a one-dot line occupies is completely different from large art.
Suppose your face is 10 dots wide on a 32-dot-square canvas. Adding a one-dot outline on each side spends two dots on the line alone — 20 percent of the face width. Only eight dots of skin remain. Add another line where the hair meets the face and the skin area shrinks further. The mental model to carry is that an outline does not bulk a shape up; it thins it down.
In practice you choose between three approaches.
The trick with selective outlining is to keep the omission consistent with your light source. If you decide the light comes from the upper left, remove the entire upper-left outline and keep the dark line only on the lower right. Varying it by whim from area to area destroys the volume and looks wrong.
It is equally important not to use pure black for the outline. Pure black is too assertive, and in a small image the line is all anyone sees. Use a darkened version of the color it borders — deep brown against skin, a darker shade of the hair color against hair — and the whole picture holds together.
Caution: Symmetry is a powerful tool, but leaning on it too hard produces art that looks machine-generated. Keep the skeleton symmetrical — the face outline, the eye positions, the shoulder width — while shifting the parting of the bangs, the length of a hair clump, the position of the hair highlight, or a pattern on the clothes by one or two dots. That small asymmetry is what gives a piece its hand-drawn warmth. Moving the hair parting one or two dots off center alone changes the impression considerably.
The other symmetry issue to watch is odd versus even widths. Making the face an even number of dots wide (say 10) puts the center line between two dots, which divides cleanly to left and right. If you want a single centered dot for a nose or mouth, an odd width (say 11) gives you a definite center cell. Deciding which you want in advance prevents the "the center is off" rework later.
On a small canvas, colors are a limited resource too. In Heartopia Design Studio, 15 to 25 colors is the practical guideline for keeping the actual dot-by-dot work manageable — but spreading those colors evenly across the whole image is the worst possible use of them. Concentrate your color budget where you want attention.
When drawing a person, attention goes to the face. So the allocation looks like this.

The other thing that matters is the brightness gap between adjacent colors. In a large image, two barely different colors placed side by side function as a smooth gradient. In a small one, the areas are too small for the difference to register, and it just reads as a vaguely dirty single mass. When choosing a base skin tone and its shadow, give them roughly a 15 to 25 percent gap in brightness and the form will read as three-dimensional even at tiny sizes.
In the tool, you shape this allocation with the color reduction features. Start with step 1, which removes the least-used colors, cleaning up shades that appear in only a few cells. What disappears there is usually photo noise or slight unevenness in the background, and the visual result barely changes. Then use step 2, which merges similar colors, to consolidate gradations that are too finely divided. If that also strips the gradation from the face or hair, back the reduction off one step and switch to the "custom" manual reduction, merging background and clothing colors by hand instead. Because tapping a color in custom mode merges it into its nearest neighbor, you can execute a simple policy: cut from everywhere except the face.
Tip: The per-color highlight display shows at a glance where a given color appears and how many cells it covers. It is how you catch waste such as "I thought the face used three colors, but the skin is actually split across five." Auditing color usage before you start placing dots shortens the work itself.
When you convert from a photo, everything above condenses into two choices: which image you pick, and how you crop it. Automatic conversion cannot invent information the source image does not contain. Most cases of a face turning to mush on a small canvas come from the source image, not the settings.
Once the crop is settled, choose a conversion method. For photos of people, the basic flow is to check method 1 (standard) first, and if the face sinks into darkness, try method 3 (high contrast). Method 3 also raises saturation, which gives the skin more color and helps the result register as "a human face" even at small sizes. For illustrations and anime-style character images, method 2 (illustration / simple) often suits better because it preserves flat fills.
Noise reduction needs care. Turning it up removes background grain, but it will also remove the eyes and mouth, which are only one or two dots. For images containing a face, start at "weak," confirm in the preview that the eyes survive, and only then step up. If it is purely the background grain bothering you, it is safer to crop out more background, or to swap in a source image with a simpler background, than to raise noise reduction.
For final adjustments, the image insertion feature in design edit mode is also useful. When the overall piece is finished but you want to redo only the face, you can place just the face portion again with adjusted scale, rotation and opacity. The same conversion method, noise reduction and color reduction flow is applied to the inserted part, and because the effect is limited to the inserted area, you can swap out the face without disturbing the work you already placed elsewhere.
Once the blueprint is done, run through these items before you begin the actual dot-by-dot work. Fixing them now saves you from redoing hundreds of cells.
Making art on a small canvas is not the skill of drawing a good line. It is the skill of designing how to distribute a limited resource. When you feel you are short on dots, do not add more — ask instead what you could throw away to let the subject stand out. The more of those decisions you stack up, the stronger a small picture becomes.
